Tags are a remnant of the 2000s and 2010s, when internet message boards were a popular way to communicate about shared interests. Users often had the ability to add small images to the end of each of their postings, which led to the development of a type of graphic called a “tag” or “sig.”

Effectively a form of digital collage, tags are small, usually rectangular images comprised of any number of elements pulled from different corners of the internet. Everything from video game artwork to abstract C4D renderings could be mashed together to create a composition representative of a user.
